15 Common English Grammar Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Learning English grammar takes time, and even advanced learners sometimes make mistakes. You might know many English words and understand conversations perfectly, but small grammar errors can affect the clarity of your speaking and writing.

The good news is that many common English grammar mistakes are easy to correct once you understand the rules.

In this guide, we'll explore 15 frequent grammar mistakes, explain why they happen, and show you how to use English correctly with practical examples.

1. Confusing "Your" and "You're"

These two words sound the same, but they have different meanings.

Your is a possessive adjective that shows ownership.
You're is a contraction of "you are."

Incorrect: You're phone is new.

Correct: Your phone is new.

Incorrect: Your very kind.

Correct: You're very kind.

Tip: If you can replace the word with "you are," use "you're." Otherwise, use "your."

2. Confusing "There," "Their," and "They're"

These three words have similar pronunciation but different uses.

There: Refers to a place or introduces something.
Their: Shows possession.
They're: Means "they are."

Examples:

The book is over there.
Their house is beautiful.
They're learning English.

Incorrect: Their going to the restaurant.

Correct: They're going to the restaurant.

3. Using "Much" and "Many" Incorrectly

Both words describe quantities, but they are used with different types of nouns.

Much is used with uncountable nouns.
Many is used with countable plural nouns.

Examples:

How much water do you drink?
How many books do you have?
I don't have much time.
She has many friends.

Incorrect: How much apples do you need?

Correct: How many apples do you need?

4. Forgetting the Third-Person "S"

In the present simple tense, we add -s or -es to the main verb when the subject is he, she, or it.

Examples:

I work every day.
She works every day.
They play football.
He plays football.

Incorrect: He work in a hospital.

Correct: He works in a hospital.

Remember: This rule applies to affirmative sentences. In questions and negative sentences with "does," use the base form of the verb.

Correct: Does she work here?

Incorrect: Does she works here?

5. Confusing "A" and "An"

We use "a" and "an" before singular countable nouns.

A comes before a consonant sound.
An comes before a vowel sound.

Examples:

A book
A university
An apple
An hour

Incorrect: She is an teacher.

Correct: She is a teacher.

Tip: Focus on pronunciation, not just spelling. "University" begins with a /juː/ sound, so we say "a university."

6. Using the Wrong Past Tense

Many learners use the wrong verb form when describing past events.

Examples:

I went to school yesterday.
She bought a new phone.
They visited their grandparents.

Incorrect: I go to the cinema yesterday.

Correct: I went to the cinema yesterday.

Tip: Learn common irregular verbs and pay attention to time expressions such as yesterday, last week, and two days ago.

7. Confusing "Since" and "For"

Both words are commonly used with the present perfect, but their meanings are different.

Since refers to a starting point.
For refers to a period of time.

Examples:

I have lived here since 2020.
I have lived here for six years.
She has studied English since January.
She has studied English for three months.

Incorrect: I have worked here since five years.

Correct: I have worked here for five years.

8. Confusing "Then" and "Than"

These words have different meanings and grammatical uses.

Then refers to time or sequence.
Than is used when comparing things.

Examples:

I finished my homework, then I watched TV.
My brother is taller than me.
This exercise is easier than the previous one.

Incorrect: She is older then her sister.

Correct: She is older than her sister.

9. Using Double Negatives

In standard English, using two negative words in the same clause can create an incorrect double negative.

Incorrect: I don't know nothing.

Correct: I don't know anything.

Incorrect: She didn't see nobody.

Correct: She didn't see anybody.

Tip: When using "don't," "doesn't," or "didn't," use words such as anything, anybody, or anywhere when you need an additional negative meaning.

10. Confusing "Me" and "I"

"I" and "me" are both pronouns, but they have different grammatical roles.

I is used as the subject of a sentence.
Me is used as the object.

Examples:

My friend and I went shopping.
She called me yesterday.
They invited my brother and me.

Incorrect: Me and Sarah went to school.

Correct: Sarah and I went to school.

11. Forgetting Articles: "A," "An," and "The"

Articles are small words, but they are important in English grammar.

A / An: Introduce a singular countable noun when it is not specific.
The: Refers to a particular or identifiable person or thing.

Examples:

I saw a dog in the street.
The dog was very friendly.
She bought an umbrella.

Incorrect: I bought new car.

Correct: I bought a new car.

Remember that plural and uncountable nouns can sometimes be used without an article:

I like music.
Books are useful.

12. Confusing Adjectives and Adverbs

Adjectives describe nouns, while adverbs often describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Examples:

She is a careful driver. (Adjective)
She drives carefully. (Adverb)
He is a slow runner.
He runs slowly.

Incorrect: She speaks English fluent.

Correct: She speaks English fluently.

Tip: Don't automatically add "-ly" to every descriptive word. Some adverbs, such as "fast" and "hard," have the same form as their adjectives.

13. Using "Can" and "Could" Incorrectly

"Can" and "could" are modal verbs used for ability, permission, and requests.

Examples:

I can swim.
She could read when she was five.
Could you help me, please?

A common mistake is adding "to" after these modal verbs.

Incorrect: I can to speak English.

Correct: I can speak English.

Incorrect: She could to drive.

Correct: She could drive.

Remember: Modal verbs such as can, could, should, and must are followed by the base form of the main verb without "to."

14. Confusing "Fewer" and "Less"

Both words describe smaller quantities, but they are generally used differently.

Fewer is used with countable plural nouns.
Less is used with uncountable nouns.

Examples:

There are fewer students today.
I need less sugar in my coffee.
We have fewer opportunities.
She spends less time watching television.

Incorrect: I have less books than you.

Correct: I have fewer books than you.

15. Confusing Present Perfect and Past Simple

These tenses are often confused because both can describe past events.

Past Simple: Describes completed actions at a specific time in the past.
Present Perfect: Connects a past action or experience to the present.

Examples:

I visited London last year.
I have visited London three times.
She finished her homework yesterday.
She has already finished her homework.

Incorrect: I have seen him yesterday.

Correct: I saw him yesterday.

Tip: Use the past simple with finished time expressions such as yesterday, last week, and in 2022.

How to Avoid Common English Grammar Mistakes

Understanding grammar rules is important, but you also need to use them regularly. Here are five practical ways to reduce mistakes:

Read in English every day: Reading articles, books, and stories helps you recognize correct sentence structures.
Practice writing: Write short paragraphs about your daily activities and check your grammar.
Listen to English conversations: Pay attention to how fluent speakers use grammar naturally.
Review your mistakes: Keep a list of errors you frequently make and practice correcting them.
Speak regularly: Use grammar structures in real conversations instead of only memorizing rules.

Consistency is the key. Short daily practice sessions can be more effective than studying grammar for several hours once a week.
